Wild Feijoa 2014

Later this month, in conjunction with the Brewers Guild Awards, we will release one of my favourite yearly seasonals, Wild Feijoa. This is the 2014 vintage, which actually means that the beer was brewed and put in barrels in 2013, while the feijoas were added in 2014. As such, the vintage indicates the harvest of the fruit, rather than the brewing of the beer.

This week we are releasing a couple of very exciting beers that we brewed at Four Avenues in Christchurch. Two beers fermented entirely with brettanomyces, which is something rather unique and special.

Farmhouse Pale Ale

New year is a good time for a new beer. Our latest keg-only release is “Farmhouse Pale Ale”, a beer shamelessly inspired by the flagship beer of Oxbow, a small farmhouse brewery in Maine, USA. Last year I spent a few days in Maine as our importer, Shelton Brothers, were hosting their annual “The Festival” in Portland. I must have tried a hundred different beers there but the one beer that stood clear in my mind when I got home was Oxbow’s Farmhouse Pale Ale.

New Beers and New Employee

As always it has been a long tiome since my last blog. What can I say, I have been too busy procrastinating...

We haven't been lazy though and have 3 new beers rolling out this week:

Semiconductor - a 4.4% Session IPA brewed with a blend of US and NZ hops (Keg only)

Sæson - a Saison aged with Brettanomyces for one year in Chardonnay Barrels from Grove Mill Winery (Keg only, bottles coming in a couple of months).

Fresh Hopwired 2013

Mashtun full of hops!

Fresh Hopwired 2013

Ahh, it is that time of year again. The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder and the leaves are slowly starting to turn brown. This also means that the good people in the hop business are busier than ever as the green little cones that we all love so much are ready to harvest.

8 Wired Cider

Our long awaited cider is finally ready to hit the shelves, just in time for the silly season. It’s been almost a year since we approached one of the best cider makers in the country, Zeffer Brewing Co., and asked them to help us make a cider. Sam and Hannah were very keen to help and able to fit another batch in their busy schedule. So in April, they pressed 5 tons of Sturmer Pippin apples and fermented the juice. Simple as that, well not quite…

Grand Cru 2011

Grand Cru Sour Belgian Quadrupel

Grand Cru 2011.

Style: Belgian Quadrupel, aged for 16 months in Pinot Noir Barrels with Brettanomyces and Pediococcus.

Grand Cru started out as The Sultan. When we made this beer last year I filled 8 old Pinot Noir barrels and more or less forgot about it. The native bugs in the barrels kept fermenting the beer, making it slightly sour. To further enhance the funky character, I blended it with 2 barrels of a Flanders Red kinda thing, that has also been fermenting funky for about 18 months.

Superconductor returns to shelves!

Superconductor Double IPA 8 Wired

Just to let you all know that my Double IPA Superconductor has made a return to shelves - both in New Zealand and a batch to America - and it's tasting intensely hoppy and awesomely intense. It's just in time to shock your tastebuds to life as the sun returns (to NZ at least). At 8.8% it's a fairly punchy brew, so do enjoy responsibly... and if it's like last year's batch it won't last long so do say I didn't warn you!

Choice Beer Week

Wednesday, August 8th 2012.

Next week is Choice Beer Week in Wellington. This is a week of beer celebration build around the Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards and culminating on the weekend with Beervana.

Fresh Hopwired

A couple of months late I think it’s time to give a quick run through of our latest release: Fresh Hopwired.
