Farmhouse Pale Ale

New year is a good time for a new beer. Our latest keg-only release is “Farmhouse Pale Ale”, a beer shamelessly inspired by the flagship beer of Oxbow, a small farmhouse brewery in Maine, USA. Last year I spent a few days in Maine as our importer, Shelton Brothers, were hosting their annual “The Festival” in Portland. I must have tried a hundred different beers there but the one beer that stood clear in my mind when I got home was Oxbow’s Farmhouse Pale Ale.

New Beers and New Employee

As always it has been a long tiome since my last blog. What can I say, I have been too busy procrastinating...

We haven't been lazy though and have 3 new beers rolling out this week:

Semiconductor - a 4.4% Session IPA brewed with a blend of US and NZ hops (Keg only)

Sæson - a Saison aged with Brettanomyces for one year in Chardonnay Barrels from Grove Mill Winery (Keg only, bottles coming in a couple of months).

Ahh, it is that time of year again. The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder and the leaves are slowly starting to turn brown. This also means that the good people in the hop business are busier than ever as the green little cones that we all love so much are ready to harvest.

8 Wired Cider

Our long awaited cider is finally ready to hit the shelves, just in time for the silly season. It’s been almost a year since we approached one of the best cider makers in the country, Zeffer Brewing Co., and asked them to help us make a cider. Sam and Hannah were very keen to help and able to fit another batch in their busy schedule. So in April, they pressed 5 tons of Sturmer Pippin apples and fermented the juice. Grand Cru Sour Belgian Quadrupel

Grand Cru 2011.

Style: Belgian Quadrupel, aged for 16 months in Pinot Noir Barrels with Brettanomyces and Pediococcus.

Grand Cru started out as The Sultan. When we made this beer last year I filled 8 old Pinot Noir barrels and more or less forgot about it. The native bugs in the barrels kept fermenting the beer, making it slightly sour. To further enhance the funky character, I blended it with 2 barrels of a Flanders Red kinda thing, that has also been fermenting funky for about 18 months.

In November 2011, Kjetil Jikiun of Nøgne Ø fame paid us a visit at Renaissance and together we brewed our first international collaboration brew.

Expanding Capacity

Last week I spent time with the talented Shane Morley of Steam Brewing Company. Together brewed the first batch of HopWired at his brewery.

We're pretty gobsmacked, words are difficult to find to describe how big an honour this is. Furthermore, considering the fact that 8 Wired has been going for less than 2 years and I have only been brewing commercially for 3 years, humble is probably the best word to describe how we are feeling.
